Stephanie and Steve Joneslee are the co-founders of Safe Pathways, a Canadian safeguarding platform that helps churches screen, train, and track their volunteers.

Pastor Stephanie Joneslee (RECE, MA, Hon. BA, ECE Dip.) has served more than ten years in pastoral ministry and longer as a Registered Early Childhood Educator. She has managed six-figure children’s ministry budgets, led large volunteer teams, taught in licensed daycare classrooms, and worked with public schools on age-appropriate safeguards. Her Master’s research explored how children build identity and belonging. She is certified in Mental Health First Aid, First Aid and CPR, the Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths tool, and HIGH FIVE. Stephanie also serves on staff at OneChurch.to, this year’s host church.

Steve Joneslee (Hon. B.Sc, CFRE) has spent over a decade building abuse-prevention policy and training. He helped the United Nations develop its system-wide Zero Tolerance policy suite and e-learning course on sexual exploitation and abuse. As founder of the Canadian charity Finance Engage Sustain, he delivered training in more than 500 high schools, colleges, and universities across all 13 provinces and territories, reaching over 100,000 participants. He has served as a committee member, board director, and elder in congregations ranging from church plants to multi-sites.

Workshop

Plan, Follow-Through, and Proof: Safeguarding That Survives a Busy Sunday

Most churches have a safeguarding policy. Far fewer can show what happened: who was screened, who was trained, who read and signed the policy, and when. That gap is where children’s ministry leaders get caught, usually years later, when a parent, a board, an insurer, or a lawyer asks a question nobody wrote down the answer to.

This workshop is a Safe Pathways demo of the three parts of safeguarding: the plan, the follow-through, and the proof. We will look at what a workable policy actually contains, what it takes to keep a volunteer team current through a busy season, and what records a church needs to keep and for how long. Stephanie brings ten years as a children’s pastor and an early childhood educator’s view of what volunteers can realistically absorb. Steve brings a decade of building abuse-prevention policy and training, including work with the United Nations, and a Canadian view of the legal and insurance expectations churches are measured against.

Target audience: children’s and family ministry pastors and directors, volunteer coordinators, and church administrators. Also useful for lead pastors and board members who carry oversight for safeguarding.
