Biography
Megan is an Anglican priest serving in the Diocese of Toronto. Megan began working in the field of children and youth ministry while still a divinity student in 2003. She has held a variety of children and youth leadership roles, as both a lay person and as a cleric. Over 20+ years of working in the field, Megan has been passionate about bringing a playful yet reverent experience to Sunday worship and has learned that child-friendly components of worship often speak to and inspire adult members of the congregation. Megan has just begun a Doctor of Ministry program at the Toronto School of Theology. Her research aim is to explore if the framework of Universal Design might apply to playful and inclusive worship. Megan and her husband Chris live with their three teenage children in Toronto and Megan is currently the incumbent priest at St. Augustine of Canterbury, Leaside. Her forthcoming website, with videos, materials, and instructions for worship leaders is due to be released in the autumn of 2025. PlayfulLiturgy.com
Workshop
Playful Liturgy-Exploring How Big Generous Symbols Can Help Children, Youth and Adults Engage More Deeply in the Worship Experience
I will present options on how to use drama, movement, music, storytelling, and props to help all ages engage with scripture and elements of worship in a playful yet reverent way. Given the time frame of the workshop, I’d like to present a drama (5 minutes) and then unpack the elements so that participants could adapt the model to fit other scripture passages or options like Feast days and Saints days. The drama will borrow from elements of the Godly Play storytelling model, but with bigger props more suitable to a presentation in a church worship space. I would also like to present a second option about how to approach elements of the worship service. Options include an interactive sermon, setting the altar for the Eucharist, joining in the Lord’s Prayer or a Eucharistic Prayer, or a seasonal element.
